Before your first lesson you'll need a provisional driving licence. You can apply online from age 15 years and 9 months, and start driving on public roads at 17.

How to apply

  1. 1Apply on the official GOV.UK website — it's the cheapest way.
  2. 2You'll need an identity document, such as a UK passport, and addresses where you've lived for the last 3 years.
  3. 3It usually arrives within a week or two, but allow longer at busy times.
