Roundabouts made simple

Lane choice, signalling and timing — the three things that make roundabouts stress-free.

5 min read

Roundabouts worry lots of learners, but they follow a clear set of rules. Once you know them, they become one of the quickest junctions to deal with.

The general rules

  1. 1Give way to traffic coming from your right, unless road markings say otherwise.
  2. 2Turning left (first exit): approach in the left lane and signal left.
  3. 3Going ahead: approach in the left lane (unless markings say otherwise), no signal on approach, then signal left after passing the exit before yours.
  4. 4Turning right: approach in the right lane, signal right, and keep right on the roundabout. Signal left after passing the exit before yours.
  5. 5Always follow the road markings and signs — they override the general rules.
